This is one of the most important papers a service member/Veteran receives - and it also helps you and your family too! Keep it as private as possible.

A service member receives this type of discharge with a good or excellent rating for their service time by exceeding standards for performance and personal conduct.

A service member may receive a general discharge if their performance is satisfactory but the individual failed to meet all expectations of conduct for military members.

This type of discharge is also termed an "OTH." This type of discharge means the military determined that the service member should be removed from the military without any honors or Veterans benefits access.

If the military considers a service member's actions to be reprehensible, the general court-martial can determine if a dishonorable discharge is in order. In this case, a service member who receives this type of discharge forfeits all their military and Veteran's benefits and may have difficulty finding work as a civilian.

A service member may receive a medical discharge or separation if a medical or mental health condition prevents them from continuing to serve.
